I messed one up once in a while, but I feel that was more to do with my lack of experience than the cutter. Used it on 12" tiles and smaller only, and I suspect, as another reviewer said, it might be a little small for 16" tile. But a nice cutter for up to 12", sturdy, easy to score/break the tiles. My only real complaint was that the adjustable measuring guide that sticks out the side is fairly flimsy and although metal of some sort, is easy to break. (Yeah, I broke it :) Overall a good quality item though, and substantially cheaper than in the big hardware stores.
The only issue was slight chipping along the cut line but that gets hidden under baseboard or counter tops anyway. I purchased this item for 12" tile thinking the 18" tile I did in the kitchen would require a wet saw which I would purchase at a later time. I have used more expensive models and cheap wet saws and think this is a great option. However it ended up cutting both great. The center ridge that helps snap the tile in half does not extend the full width of the foam surface but my tile cut straight as an arrow along the scored line from the cutting wheel. I paid $35 at the time and it definitely paid for itself. My father is a professional installer and I learned the trade working with him while growing up etc.
I tried the 16" once more and had the same problem. I tried to cut my 16" porcelain tile, it did a clean break 12" down and the break veers off. Cannot cut 16" tile. I looked under where the tile sits and I found out the protuberance below tile only goes up to 12" and there's no support for it under the tile beyond that. I tried it again w/ the same problem. Then I decided to try a 12", thinking that it was just mine that was defective, but it worked fine. From the other review it seems to cut 13", but my guess is that it's probably not a good idea to try and use this on any tiles larger than that. I gave it two stars because it actually does cut 12" tiles.
Just put heavy even pressure as you pull it towards you to score the tile. This tile cutter was much cheaper than Lowes or Home Depot and does a fantastic job. You can cut and snap the tile in one stroke. When you get to the end of the tile you just press down and the tile breaks cleanly. I have a wet saw too, but this cut cleaner and much, much faster.
I have purchased and have used tile-cutters before but this one was exceptional, this machine cut 1/2" x 13" easily without breakages and the good thing about it it cost me drastically less than similar machines I personally vouch for this equipment and would recommend it to anyone any day. I hope there is lots more where this came from
